This large vine can reach 25 feet in length and is adorned with faintly scented blue-white flowers in late spring to early summer. Flowers appear on new growth so pruning in the late winter to early spring helps to produce more blooms. American Wisteria is less aggressive and less damaging to structures than the Asian species but the flowers are just as beautiful. The seed pods that form add additional interest once the blooms have faded. Prefers full sun to light shade. Grows best in average to moist soil but can handle some minor flooding. Adaptable to a variety of soils including clay and sandy although does best in slightly acidic soils. Prefers slight shelter from cold wind. Host plant to Zarucco Duskywing and several skipper butterflies.
