Rue Anemone is a lovely native woodland wildflower that blooms for three weeks in mid to late spring. It is a short and dainty plant with fine, fern-like foliage only growing to 9″ tall and spreading its way around the landscape by self-seeding, though it is not aggressive. The flowers cheerfully face upward and are held above the soft green foliage. It is possible with consistent soil moisture during the heat of summer for the plants to continue blooming, but they often go completely dormant in the summer heat. For this reason, it pairs very well with low, spreading groundcovers that can fill the void left by their dormancy. The root system is fibrous and consists of little fleshy tubers from which the crown of the plant sprouts. While Rue Anemone appreciates adequate soil moisture, it is important that the soil also be well-draining or it can cause the tubers to rot.
