AutoCAD was intended to replace many of the functions previously provided by two competing desktop-based computer-aided design (CAD) applications, namely Drafting and Graphics. AutoCAD was designed by Ray Duncan and his team at Autodesk. It was first released for use on December 4, 1982, by Nippon Chemi-Con Corporation (NCC) as the software product of its E&D department, with the plan to promote it as a system to streamline and automate drafting work. The first commercial version, AutoCAD 2.0, was released in April 1983 for the Apple II, Atari 800 and Commodore 64 (C64). The first version to run on a microcomputer, an 80286 PC-compatible computer, was AutoCAD 3.0 in July 1983. In November 1984 the Macintosh version of AutoCAD was released.
