The US army is launching a crackdown on officers who falsely issue fitness for duty certificates, ordering officers to check if their soldiers are fit before “discovering” that they are unfit.
The move is the latest in a series of American military scandals, which have led to the dismissal of four generals in the last six months. Last week, it emerged that a US marine had been discharged after being found to be a drug addict.
Last night the army admitted that it had falsified thousands of medical certificates. It said the orders were issued by a “redacted” unit, adding that it could not say if any soldiers had been harmed by the certificates.
Brig Gen John R Huggins, deputy chief of staff for operations, said: “There are no fitness-for-duty certificates in the active-duty Army. The issuance of these orders were unnecessary, because the soldiers who applied for these certificates were otherwise medically qualified for duty.
“If these orders had been followed, the soldiers in question would have been denied the opportunity to receive these certificates.”
General Huggins said the orders were sent to officers in the 1st Cavalry Division, who passed them on to their soldiers. He said he did not know if any soldiers had suffered from the misconduct, adding that a full investigation was under way.
The army launched its inquiry last week, and enlisted the help of the FBI, after it emerged that a 37-year-old marine, who had served in the city of Mosul in Iraq, was dismissed for drug abuse.
A report in the army’s official newspaper, Army Times, quoted the man, who was not named, as saying he was never given a chance to tell his side of the story.
He said the army had called his mother, who had claimed that she was unaware of any problems and told him to “come back home and deal with it”. He added: “My family doesn’t even know what happened to me. I just couldn’t believe what was happening.”

A new year brings new features
The way AutoCAD has approached new features in recent years is to give users more ways to interact with the application, so we’ve done the same with AutoCAD 2023. First and foremost, we’ve added a new 3D Warehouse tab that allows you to bring in, browse and navigate 3D models from the Autodesk 3D software of your choice. From there, you can drag and drop models to place them into your current drawing. You can also navigate and rotate the model in the viewport to see the view you want to see and work from.
In addition to 3D models, you can now also bring in PDFs, DWGs
